How to Sew Bias Tape into a Garment

Bias tape is used to encase elastic, finish raw edges, make piping and more. Instead of sewing elastic directly into the sleeve I recently used it to encase elastic on a toddler dress. (Have you ever had a child complain about a scratchy seam or pinching elastic? Bias tape helps you avoid that!)

You can make your own bias tape, but I'll save that for another day😉

Purchase the bias tape called for on your pattern. I used 1/2" single fold.

1. After you mark the casing line on each end of the piece you are attaching the tape too(a sleeve in this case), pin the bias tape in place.

2. Pin the bottom of the bias tape in line with your casing line markings.

3. Top stitch the top and bottom of the bias tape. The most important thing when sewing bias tape is to keep it open in the center. If you sew down the center, you will not be able to insert your elastic or other material.

4. You are ready to insert your elastic or other material!
